About MariettA, GEORGIA

Marietta, home to the Gone with the Wind museum, is a classic antebellum southern town resplendent with history that grew up into one of Atlanta’s largest suburbs. Officially recognized by the Georgia General Assembly in 1834, Marietta was originally designated as the railroad hub for Western & Atlantic. By 1850, when the railroad officially began operation, the hub had been moved 20 miles southwest to Marthasville - the area that would later be known as Atlanta. Marietta’s close proximity allowed the residents to share in Atlanta’s prosperity as it has continued to do for close to two centuries.

Like many 19th century towns, life in Marietta was centered around a prominent courthouse in a town square. The original log cabin courthouse did not survive, but Historic Marietta Square is still the hear t of city and beloved by its residents. The modern incarnation of this town center features an iconic cast iron fountain and reproduction of the famous General locomotive. A lush throwback to a bygone era, Marietta Square is brought to life each spring by an abundance of azaleas, shady oaks, live music performances, weddings, and festivals. Year-round, residents enjoy bustling activity amidst the quaint cafes, community theaters, local art galleries, fine dining restaurants, popular bars, and multiple museums that surround what has become the heart of the city.

As the county seat of Cobb, Marietta attracts many home buyers seeking lower tax rates than adjacent Atlanta (Fulton County), some of the state’s most highly ranked schools, and abundant economic opportunity. Cobb has long been home to Dobbins Air Force Base, Lockheed Martin, and headquarters for The Home Depot and The Weather Channel. 2017 brought the relocation of the Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball franchise and the opening of SunTrust Park and the mixed use Battery development featuring popular restaurants, hotels, bars, and shopping. For commuters working in Atlanta, Marietta is easily accessed via I-75 directly northwest of Atlanta.
